We propose to create, implement and evaluate a scale-aware, Mesoscale Eddy Parameterization (MEP) that acts correctly in the presence of multiple grid-length scales.
Mesoscale ocean eddies play a critical role in determining the climate of the ocean and how the ocean will respond to climate change forcing. Given present-day computing resources it is not feasible to resolve ocean mesoscale processes in routine CMIP- style simulations. We now have an ocean multiscale framework that provides an opportunity to resolve mesoscale eddies in important regions of the ocean with currently available computing resources.
We envision the global ocean model being configured with one to several regions at eddy permitting resolution. Thus, the global ocean domain will contain a full spectrum of resolutions and will necessarily require a MEP that transitions seamlessly between regions with no direct simulation of eddy activity into regions with a complete simulation of eddy activity.
